Should I be working on my house and prepping it to sell? Obviously.
Am I? Of course not.
Why? Because OMG it’s so easy to get sucked into the vacuum of types of homes to live in for a temporary situation! Our primary focus is a camper because it’s obviously the easiest mode of shelter and could move with us when we buy land. I’m going to show some of the camper layouts I’m most interested in and some of the other shelter types I’ve stumbled down the rabbit hole into.
HERE WE GO!
CAMPERS
I’ve found tons of campers that could work for our 4-person family. Luckily my kids are still small, so they won’t be too picky as long as they’re with mama. I, however, need some space from them from time to time. So, my absolute favorite plans have either a separate bunk room OR a room that could be turned into a kids space fairly easily.

The Chaparral Coachmen RV
This is the ideal floorplan if you want everything ready to rock for camper life with kids!
For the kids: a separate bathroom for the kids with a tub, separate room for them with 2 double size bunks, PLUS their own entertainment room in the back. Perfect for storing toys and listening to whatever movie they are watching on repeat this week.
For the parents: Private bedroom, several wardrobes, washer/dryer unit, full size fridge, nice large floor plan, nice modern feel. I also enjoy that the tv is opposite the couch in the main living space on this one. Many of them have the TV perpendicular to the couch which I am not a fan of.
Downside: Queen bed instead of King, small bathtub for kids.

Forest River Heritage Glen 356QB
This one contains some of my favorite features again: The kid’s bunk room, the separate bathroom, and a king size bed. I also love the layout on the back of this RV for dogs. The back bathroom/bunkroom area could be great for dogs at night. Our dogs are used to having the kitchen as their space in our house now so designating an area for them would be nice.
For the kids: Own bathroom, own bedroom with lots of space and bunks to spare, U shaped dinette (BIG FAN).
For the Parents: King size bed, residential size tub, kids on opposite side of RV for a bit more privacy 😉
Downsides: No kitchen Island, not much counterspace, Tv is perpendicular to sofa.

Toy haulers are another idea. I thought I could turn the “garage” area into a full time back bedroom with either bunks or two twin beds and it would leave room for the kids to store toys and play in their own space. Toy haulers usually feature a ½ bath attached to the garage – perfect for bedtime teeth brushing. I haven’t found the perfect floorplan yet with a bathtub for the kids as well as other features I love for my family such as a dinette, king size bed, w/d hookups in the master, and a kitchen island or peninsula. I will come update this if I find “the one” but I wanted to at least mention toy haulers as a viable option.
PORTABLE BUILDINGS
I’ve also stumbled onto portable buildings – wood buildings with options for siding and roofing that are prefabricated, can come finished or you can order just the “shell” and finish yourself. I’m very interested in these to put on our own land once purchased. You can place them on several foundation types – pier system, slab, full basement, or cinderblock. They arrive built to your ordering specifications; just drop on your foundation and VOILA! Shelter! Here are a few of my favorites!
Campbell Cabins – The Cederview 3, and the Chapparal
These have a raised roofline which gives the illusion of more space but they are not tiny houses by any means! There are floor plans ranging from 364 sq ft to 1100+ sq ft. One, two- and three-bedroom floorplans. Most of these also can be customized. Perfect option for those seeking a little more permanent solution to shelter.
The Cedar View 3
I really adore the kitchen design on this one. Big island offers lots of counter space. This floorplan accommodates a stacked washer dryer unit, decent walk in closet space in the master, 2 bathrooms, 3 bedrooms and an open living space.

The Chapparal This floorplan is similar to the last one with a few notable differences. The kitchen is a corner layout and the washer dryer closet has room for side by side appliances.

Other types of portable buildings that I’ve found are a bit smaller but equally appealing when you consider price. These again have the option to just buy the shell, or purchase them finished. These are essentially oversized sheds but the basic structure can give you a lot to work with!
There are MANY websites that offer these types of buildings. With a quick search of “portable cabin” you can probably locate a dealer near you. This link will give you a general idea though! The largest “shells” are typically under or right around $20,000. You would have to install plumbing, electrical, finishes, interior walls etc. It would literally just be the outside structure. To purchase one finished, the larger ones seem to run around $50k. Obviously, finishes could influence that number.

That’s what I’ve found so far! Thanks for jumping in the rabbit hole with me! If you bookmark this page, I will try to come back to it and update if I find other options!
